FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the New York Rock Exchange?

In the days before MP3s, a music collection was more than just a bunch of files on your hard drive. It was something you could hold in your hands and lose yourself in forever. Today, album art has been reduced to thumbnail images, and most songs are little more than a bunch of 1s and 0s floating in a cloud.

The New York Rock Exchange is built for people who want more.

We allow fans to own a piece of a song. Not a copy of a song, but a piece of the music itself. We work directly with artists to let fans become co-owners of songs, with limited edition exclusives and experiences they can't get anyplace else.

What does it mean to become a "co-owner" of a song?

When you buy and register a Collector's Share, we assign a small portion of the song's copyright to you.  This assignment doesn't give you any sort of financial stake or control over the song (check out the terms and conditions for details), but it DOES make you a real CO-OWNER of the song. Just you, the other New York Rock Exchange shareholders, and the band.

When you hear that song on the radio you can tell your friends "I own a piece of that!" Because you do!

*Note that some of our earlier shares (C019 and earlier--all released prior to June 2014) do not include co-ownership of the song. See share descriptions for a complete description of the exclusives for these shares.

Can I Sell My Share?

Absolutely. And it may even go up in value.

Unlike CDs, Vinyl, and other ways that people collect music, Collector's Shares are released in extremely limited quantities. We are only authorized to produce a limited number, and when those sell out we can NEVER release any more.

The New York Rock Exchange provides a secondary marketplace where users can buy and sell Collector's Shares just as you would baseball cards, vintage vinyl, or limited edition art. We even maintain a public listing of current values based on recent transactions. For more information, please read our Guide to the Secondary Market.

As a co-owner, do I get royalties?

No. Collector's Shares are designed for fans.  Your ownership does not give you any right to monetize or control the music. Instead, you'll get special "insider exclusives" like unreleased tracks, exclusive merch, and online meet and greets.  The exclusives are different for each Collector's Share--check the details to see what is included.

Why don't I get any royalties?

A bunch of reasons.  Most of them legal, but a lot are related to the fact that the music business is an extraordinarily complex industry that has spent the last 20 years collapsing on itself.  If you are a casual investor looking to make money, music is probably not the place.

That said, the emotional value of owning a song is pretty much priceless.  And that's what the New York Rock Exchange is all about.

Does the artist benefit from this?

Absolutely! In fact, buying a Collector's Share is one of the single best ways you can support the artists who create the music you love.

In addition to providing financial support, the New York Rock Exchange also give artists a new way to engage with their audience.  By allowing them to share the ownership of their music, and "give back" with shareholder exclusives, the New York Rock Exchange allows artists to connect with fans on a whole new level.

How do I give a Collector's Share as a gift?

You can purchase and gift a Collector's Share just like you would anything else. Once the recipient opens their share, they'll be able to register it in their name, and claim all the shareholder rewards.

What are the Certificates like?

The certificates are nice.  Really nice.  They fit beautifully in a 12" x 12" frame, and are perfect for hanging on the wall like a gold record.

Each certificate is painstakingly crafted using two different foils and 6 different press operations. They come shipped in an album cover just like vinyl did back in the day.

In addition, certificates for Gold shares are hand signed by the artist. These shares are very limited, and highly sought after on the secondary market.
